Albert Silverman is an example of a species that has emerged with the
internet - the Net Kook. Formerly restricted to annoying people in bars or
on street corners, these kooks now have an audience: usenet.

I'm an artist, and usually look in on the group rec.arts.fine. The major
net kook there is a cat called Mani Deli. Mani has his own ideas on what
constitutes art, and has been repeating them ad nauseam since 1995. He
never changes. As with Albert, people who come into the group often try to
reason with him for awhile before giving up. Example: 'Picasso was a
no-talent charlatan who couldn't draw....' His explanation for the vast
popularity of modern art and artists: it's a conspiracy! Check him out and
enjoy.

I must say that your 'Albert Silverman' has given me quite a few laughs
recently. Thanks for that.

I knew Al Silverman from when he frequented Balboa Park in San Diego, back in the late 70's. He taught me that I had a lot to learn about music. I was pretty good on guitar back then, but had only scratched the surface when it came to proper chording. For the past 25 years I've worked professionally as a guitarist. The desire to live up to his standards really helped me attain a very comfortable facility with respect to the guitar, and music in general. For the record, Al was a highly trained classical pianist and accordionist. When I knew him, I watched him play classical pieces and jazz standards with expertise. His "jazz" was a bit wooden, but he certainly knew exactly what he was doing. And he could improvise. Also for the record, he was a brilliant amateur photographer, a master Bridge player. For money, he worked as a highly paid electronics engineer for General Dynamics, etc. I am pretty sure he was, in fact, some sort of genius. He was a critical observer of people.
