Discussion:
Software to Show Pitch

Does anyone make software that would show your pitch graphically as you are
singing?

One basic application for this would be as a tool for teaching people to
sing. There could be a practice scale - for example - and when the student
sings back the sale each note she sings would show as a particular pitch,
and the target pitch would appear next to that. This allows the student to
make real-time corrections to the voice to adjust to the correct pitch.

I'm not trying to patch up a bad pitch in software. I'm trying to teach
someone to generate the correct pitch in the first place.

Hello, and although I've used EarMaster 5 (version 6 is out,
www.earmaster.com) for about everything else except what you want, it
may offer that capability. Sincerely,

Hi,
!Transcribe! would do all that you ask if you record it first but I don't know if there is an option for that or not. Its shareware and he will respond if you ask him and maybe provide you information for what you want. I use it if I want to transcribe something and it is great. You can see the keyboard view and the overtones by amplitude and pitch relative to the visual keyboard (it goes in the cracks on the display) I would suggest there, but I do wonder if that is the best way to teach someone to sing on pitch.

I have a great exercise that will build very strong relative pitch in a tonal setting for a beginner or for professionals to keep "in tune" with themselves. After learning the exercise, Movable DO will really start to "tune in" with your singing. Let me know if you are interested. Its free.

Are there any other group members still around? I don't know how I found this one to post to you, but good to see your name again.

consider real time might not be optimal.
people record themselves and then listen back.
Then, you can use any pitch correction software to view the waveform if you really want.
melodyne
autotune
etc.

Also, see what's happening with violin intonation software

in addition, better have a handle on intonation practices of singers : just, pythagorean, etc.

That's a very cool device. But shouldn't something like this be
implemented as an Android or iPad application rather than requiring
proprietary hardware?

Yes its possible...sometimes people like a dedicated box. But it seems to be the way things are going (more generic programmable hardware).

In effect its like a tuner, but with additional features for singers.

On my windows phone I have a tuner that allows you to select tons of scales and you can just sing into it and you will see immediately what your note is exactly and you can see if it is sharp or flat or in frequency numbers and on a grand staff so for a scale, you just sing it and tune your self in. then sing what ever you want and you will see which note you are hitting and exactly how off your are.

You can even set it for different tuning patterns

Oh, and you can also see a representation of the overtones you are producing. Its really a lot for a cell phone, and its sensitivity is REALLY sensitive so you really have to be in to get the green notes!

But its cheap so see if it is made in your platform.

Accurate Tuner by Asinulus

I do think, however, you will do better with Movable DO Sight Singing exercises. You can learn to hear the pitch before you sing it naturally. There are exercises that will increase your ability to correct your voice to hear what you see on the music score and train your voice to tune into it if your voice is not controlled by your ear as yet and then the more you do, the more accurate you are on the first pop and the better in tune you become when you sing.
